Learning Disability Health Checks fall short of expectation

LD health checks were a response to political pressure to do something about inequalities in healthcare for people with learning disability.  Now the Strategic Health Authority is whining that General Practitioners have not done enough of these.

I believe that an important reason for this inequality of healthcare is poor community care/supervision.   People with mild to moderate LD may have difficulty with reading, writing and oral communication.  They may be exploited in the work place and at home.  This is a matter for SOCIAL SERVICES, not general practitioners.

It is scandalous that people with moderate to severe LD no longer have easy access to residential care and all the professionals who used to work in those places: Physiotherapy, Dieticians, OTs, Speech Therapists, Psychologists, Teachers, and LD nurses (and doctors).

It is ironic that when there is more sophisticated supervision of residential homes and care facilities than ever before, that there are scant residential facilities for adults (and children) with LD.

The SHA has pulled the plug on budgets for LD specialists in the Allied Health Professions and now the SHA had the temerity to say GPs are not doing enough. In my opinion no GP should be undertaking the LD DES until and unless there is adequate provision for the proper treatment of the problems which are well known in LD client group.

Matt Mullenweg — aka Photo Matt — on WordPress, Web, Jazz, Life, and Photography is a place to hop to for a glimpse into the life of one of the youngest influential man in cyberspace. Matt is the CEO of Wordpress which hosts approx 18 million sites now. Quoted on TWIT on 6th March declaring that DoS attacks occur regularly. The attack on Thursday 3rd March was targeting a gaming site and originated from servers in China. Speculation on This Week in Tech that this may be Russian in origin raised a few eyebrows.
